IH Campus Welcomes Familiar Faces

By Marbella Trujillo ’19

Among Immaculate Heart High School’s new faculty and staff members this year are an IH alumna as well as a long-term substitute who is now a permanent teacher. The Bamboo recently caught up with instructors Laurence Toal and Caitlin Ross to chat about their roles on campus.

Laurence Toal
Bamboo: “What subject and grade do you teach?”
Toal: “I teach Intro to Computer Science and AP Computer Science and Computer Topics. These courses are open to all four grade levels. There are mostly sophomores in my intro class. There are mainly juniors and seniors in my AP Computer Science and Computer Topics classes.”

Bamboo: “What school did you work at before Immaculate Heart?”
Toal: “This is my first time teaching. I was a teacher’s assistant for a lot of courses in different schools during my undergrad years. During my post-grad, I was a teacher’s assistant for computer science and politics.”

Bamboo: “What made you decide to work at Immaculate Heart High School?”
Toal: “I graduated from Immaculate Heart. I love this school, and the environment is an amazing place. My mom heard they were offering a computer science job here, and she encouraged me to work at IH.”

Bamboo: “How did you feel on your first day of working at Immaculate Heart?”
Toal: “It was weird being on campus as a teacher and not as a student. It took me awhile to get used to that shift. I reminisce from time to time about my years here at IH.”

Bamboo: “What is your favorite part of coming to Immaculate Heart every day?”
Toal: “Teaching my students is one of my favorite parts here at IH. It’s always great to see them. They make me happy because they are so energetic to learn.”

Bamboo: “So far, what school event have you enjoyed the most and why?”
Toal: “Welcome Day and the WALK have been my favorite events so far. It’s heartwarming to see the freshmen experience for the very first time how special IH is. For me personally, Welcome Day has always been one my favorite school events.”

Caitlin Ross

Bamboo: “What school did you work at before Immaculate Heart?”
Ross: “I taught at the Armory Artworks in Pasadena and also pre-school, elementary, and high school students during my graduate studies.”

Bamboo: “What made you decide to work at Immaculate Heart High School?”
Ross: “Corita Kent is a big inspiration. The students are really inspirational as well. This is a great place to be and to teach.”

Bamboo: “How did you feel on your first day of working at Immaculate Heart?”
Ross: “I was nervous and excited because I don’t like public speaking.”

Bamboo: “What is your favorite part of coming to Immaculate Heart every day?”
Ross: “Walking into the classroom and seeing the art and students. I never know what the day is going to bring.”

Bamboo: “So far, what school event have you enjoyed the most and why?”
Ross: “Mary’s Day 2018. There is so much talent, performance and art. Everyone is celebrating the school and its legacy. It’s a fun day to be together. Super duper fun. Really pretty! Graduation is super emotional as you see the impact IH has on students’ lives. You witness their growth as they go into the world.”
