A Review of Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi

by Olivia Fries-Farr ‘19

*Warning: Contains a few spoilers!*

On December 15th, the much anticipated 8th episode in the Star Wars franchise hit the big screen. The Last Jedi, the second episode in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, was for me, better than its precursor, The Force Awakens.

The movie, written and directed by Rian Johnson and based on the iconic characters and worlds created by George Lucas, brought to life a completely original storyline. It felt as if the creators and producers were trying to change the formula of the typical Star Wars movie, instead of going with a plot line similar to that of older episodes. I think this was an excellent move and, although love for the film among viewers was not completely unanimous, for the most part, it did not disappoint Star Wars fans.

When I asked my friends and family about the movie, some either really liked it or really hated it; there did not seem to be an in between. Based on that, I can say that the film was a mixed bag.  While I thoroughly enjoyed the film, I felt that the movie did feel a little slow during the first half. The ball started rolling when Finn and a new character, Rose, went off on a crazy adventure in search of a way to stop Kylo Ren’s army.

There are several great moments in the film that have audiences returning to see the film two or three times in the theaters before the long wait for DVD rentals and cable runs.  A couple good moments were when Kylo and Rey were connecting through the force and how their connection grew stronger which caused a lot of tension. These scenes sparked online debates about the relationship between the two characters!

For me, the greatest part of the whole movie by far was Luke Skywalker’s standoff with Kylo Ren. Without spoiling everything, I can say for certain that everyone in the theatre was amazed on the edge of their seats during the final scene.

I think that you should definitely take time to watch this new addition to the Star Wars franchise and see for yourself the epic adventure with all of its amazing special effects, awesome fight scenes, and new characters from a galaxy far, far away.

May the force be with you!

Favorite quotes:

Luke Skywalker: Where did you come from?
Rey: Nowhere.
Luke Skywalker: No one is from nowhere.
Rey: Jakku.
Luke Skywalker: Yeah, that’s pretty much nowhere.

Luke Skywalker: Why did you think I chose the hardest location to find in the entire galaxy? I came to this island to die.

Snoke to Kylo Ren: You are no Vader. You are just a child in a mask.

Rose Tico: We’re going to win this war not by fighting what we hate, but saving what we love!

Rey to Kylo Ren: Do you have something, a towel, or something you can put on?

Kylo Ren: Did you come back to say you forgive me? To save my soul?
Luke Skywalker: No.
Luke Skywalker: I failed you, Ren. I’m sorry.
Kylo Ren: I’m sure you are! The Resistance is dead, the war is over, and when I kill you, I will have killed the last Jedi!
Luke Skywalker: Amazing. Every word of what you just said was wrong. The Rebellion is reborn today. The war is just beginning. And I will not be the last Jedi.
