Freshmen React To Welcome Day

By Arleen Lamba ’16 and Gigi Teverbaugh ’16

How could one not enjoy Welcome Day, with all its entertaining skits from each class, upbeat songs, beautiful posters, matching costumes, delightful dances, and hilarious faculty performances?

Since Welcome Day honors the freshmen entering the IHHS community, we wanted to know what they thought about the celebration.

Freshman Grace Goldberg, eager to share, found her Welcome Day to be “really fun…and a great experience!”

When asked about her experience starring in the Freshman skit as Shrek, Justice Kochevar responded with a laugh. “It was so scary, but it was fun!” she said. “Also, a lot of it was improv. A lot of the lines we said weren’t originally supposed to be there, like when someone said ‘You’re wearing sweats? You can’t sit with us!’ We basically grabbed the mic from each other and said stuff.” Screen Shot 2015-09-23 at 8.09.10 PM

With regard to the long tradition of moshing to Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone,” freshman Malena Logan said she thought the quad dancing “looked very cool! Welcome Day was really fun!”

When asked whose skit was her favorite, freshman Maya Feuilladieu exclaimed, “The Juniors! Their video and song were so cute!” While she did enjoy her first IH Welcome Dance, Feuilladieu did offer one suggestion for the future. “I think it would have been better if the dance had been on Saturday so more guys could come,” she said.

Ally Mollo, a freshman coming from the middle school, was very excited to finally experience Welcome Day as a high school student and recalled, “When we were in the middle school, we would wish that we could be in the auditorium with the high Screen Shot 2015-09-23 at 8.09.28 PMschoolers because [Welcome Day] always sounded so much fun.”

Thankfully, Welcome Day met the expectations of other middle school alums. Sam Getz, another middle school alumna, couldn’t say enough about the school tradition. “It was honestly the first fun experience I’ve had at the high school!” she said.

Although the task of preparing for Welcome Day is always daunting, all the hard work is rewarding, especially when we hear our freshmen sisters react so positively to their very first Welcome Day! Even with such short notice they were able to pull off an adorable skit about a fairytale high school. Great work, freshmen!
